About Loma Portal

Loma Portal is a hilly community that overlooks the bay in San Diego, California. It is located northeast of Nimitz Boulevard and northwest of Rosecrans Street.

Loma Portal is popular for its holiday decorations with elaborate displays on several Garrison Street blocks. The local park also has a luminaria lighting each Christmas Eve. The Plumosa Park is a 1.4 acre venue that is used for dog walking and kite flying. This area also includes the James Edgar and Jean Jessop Hervey Point Loma Branch Library as well as a business and retail center on Voltaire Street.

The San Diego Unified School District is the second largest in the state. Students in this community may attend facilities like Point Loma High School as well as highly ranked Loma Portal Elementary School and Correia Middle School. There are hundreds of private institutions like the Calvary Christian Academy, Escondido Adventists Academy, the Montessori American School, and Halstrom Academy. Public universities include the University of California (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU) as well as the San Diego Community College District.

There are several golf venues in the city including The Loma Club which features an A. G. Spaulding nine-hole course as well as tournaments and lessons. This community is located under the Lindbergh Field takeoff flight path and residents are familiar with the “Point Loma Pause” because of the noise.

There are many shopping venues in this area including Point Loma Plaza, Rosecrans Shopping Center, and the West Point Loma Plaza Center. The San Diego Bay offers many activities and events including the Fourth of July fireworks known as the Big Bay Boom.
